Attic alabastra found in the necropoli of the northern black sea coast (X. Gorbunova)

Excavations of the necropoli on the northern Black Sea coast, dating back to the first half of the fifth century B.C., have yielded Attic pottery alabastra side by side with alabaster ones. The vessels usually occur in women's and children's burials. The specimens discussed in the present article include three alabastra painted with figures of Negroes and one with the group of Herakles and Alkyoneus, already published by Beazley. Others are attributed and dated by the author of the paper and include seven vessels decorated by the Emporion Painter, one alabastron ascribed to an artist of the circle of the Pan Painter, and one, a red-figure piece, attributed to Aeschines Painter, the latter being the most recent of the group and dated to the sixties of the fifth century B.C.
